about

This album is a bit strange. A short description of it would be that it's a concept album with an American Civil War theme, but, for me at least, there's much more to it than that.

It tells the story of a grief-stricken Union soldier, coping with an abrupt end to his marriage and fighting to preserve his humanity in a world gone mad with bloodlust. Rather than conveying a series of specific events, each song represents a different stage in his emotional and mental journey, with short breaks interspersed within the narrative that switch to my own perspective, usually for only one or two lines at a time.

For several years, I've been inexplicably fascinated by this war and its consequences. Though certainly courageous, the hearts of those who fought it were far more complex than simply being full of either good or evil. On both sides, there existed goodness and darkness. Loyalty and betrayal. Compassion and hatred. My hope is that I've captured a sliver of that with this album, and that you as the listener take something valuable away from it, even if its something I didn't intend to impart.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and more importantly thanks for listening.

My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone involved in the making of this album, as well as the Civil War reenacting community of Southern California, who has not only helped me have a greater understanding of history but has done so for thousands of others as well. Specifically, it was wonderful of Ryan Doezie of the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry to allow me to use his tintype as an album cover, even though I probably ruined it by putting a black bar over his eyes.

A thousand blessings and huzzahs upon you all!
